The Sustainable Backcourts Initiative (SBI)
The Sustainable Backcourt Initiative Is a partnership of four Glasgow Housing
Associations. (Partick, Shettleston, Tollcross and Glasgow Housing Associations),
and one private tenement in Hillhead (Gibson Street, Otago Street & Westbank
Quadrant – GOW) as well as Kelvin Clyde Greenspace. The SBI is a study
looking at how tenement backcourts can be redeveloped and revitalised to
meet 21st century
needs. The introduction of recycling stations, seating, wildlife gardens and
other communal facilities are being explored as part of the study as well
as the re-landscaping of the backcourts to include attractive bin stores
and drying areas.
The SBI is a pilot project. The four chosen sites have been selected because
they show a wide range of tenement backcourt designs and may show how we can
learn from these examples and improve backcourt design and use throughout the
city.
The Sustainable Backcourts Initiative website describes the four pilot sites
and illustrates the work which took place to consult with residents and redesign
the backcourts. A full copy of the final SBI report is included.
