Beardmore Park, Parkhead

Kelvin Clyde Greenspace were asked by the EDEN project (a landfill tax funded scheme to identify ground condition issues that prevent reuse of vacant land) to explore the development of a greenspace on this large and important and potentially vacant site.

Beardmore Park is an ambitious project to transform an area of brownfield land in a prominent location between Westmuir Street and Shettleston Road into a Community Greenspace with features to suit all members of the community. In a previous life the site had been everything from a petrol filling station to tenement flats and part of the forge industrial complex before decaying into one of the areas most notable eyesores.

Over the last year or two Kelvin Clyde Greenspace have worked closely with the local community to develop an innovative scheme to transform the site into a public greenspace. The support and guidance has come from all sectors of the community whether it is individuals attending or responding to consultations, groups such as Parkhead Youth Project and Playbusters who have organised events, secured funds and promoted the scheme. Other larger local organisations such as Parkhead Housing Association, Shettleston Housing Association, Glasgow Clyde Valley Greenspace Trust have helped secure funds from the Big Lottery Fund, host meetings and disseminate consultation information.

The scheme designed on behalf of the community by City Design Co-operative partnership and estimated to cost over £800,000 is due for implementation in the autumn /winter of 2004/5 subject to securing the balance of funds required. To date almost half of the money has been raised and bids are in with ERDF and Glasgow City Council for the balance. When it is completed the scheme will be a testament to the hard work of the whole community particularly organisations like Playbusters, who have supported the scheme from the outset.
