Garscadden Wood ( LNR )

Garscadden Wood is an area of Ancient Woodland which is home to a variety of wildlife, many large beautiful oak trees and a spectacular colony of Bluebells in early summer. Roe deer are commonly seen in the woods, which are home to the rare Purple Hairstreak butterfly and a valuable site for local woodland wildlife such as the beautiful Great Spotted Woodpecker and the uncommon Spotted Flycatcher.

The wood is due to be designated as a Local Nature Reserve and will then be given additional protection to conserve this important local natural landmark.

As part of this designation a management committee will be established to oversee the changes which may be undertaken in the wood. The involvement of local people on this committee is critical to its success and to the success of any proposed changes. Local people will be asked their views of the woods and to come up with ideas about what facilities should be in the woods, how we can encourage more active use of the area and how to improve safety and the current perceptions of Garscadden Wood.

A community consultation will be held later this year to gain community support for the designation of the wood and all local people are invited to contribute their views which will influence the subsequent changes to the wood.
