Allotments
There are over 30 allotments in Glasgow. They help local people lead healthy
lives through the activity of gardening and through the growing and eating of
fruits and vegetables. They can also provide important food and shelter sites
for the city’s plants and animals. KCG is currently working with the plot
holders of two Glasgow allotments to improve their sites for biodiversity and
recreation.
New Victoria Gardens
Earlier this year the Committee of New Victoria Gardens allotments in Pollokshields
asked if we could help develop an area of their garden for use by the children
of plot-holders and to create a wildlife area.
In the spring volunteers with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers
went in to the garden to turn an overgrown corner of the allotments into a
children’s
area and wildlife garden.
A checkers board was painted on to an old concrete greenhouse base and seating
installed. Old trees, shrubs and plants were removed and replaced with wildlife-friendly
plants which will provide food and shelter to wildlife. A butterfly garden was
planted, berry bearing shrubs too, and a bird bath was placed into the site to
give birds a drink and a wash and to allow children to get closer to them.
This winter native trees and shrubs will be planted and next spring wildflowers
introduced to create a woodland wildlife garden.
