Rose
Garden
The Project was approached by artist Amanda Currie, working on the Gorbals regeneration
programme, who had developed the concept of creating an orchard
with the community in the old Rose Garden cemetery site. The fruit trees and
shrubs include a range of local varieties of apple, pear, damson and a range
of soft fruit bushes together
with wildflowers and herbs.
The project is one of the key elements of the regeneration of the park alongside
a re-establishment of rose beds, new trees and another arts project called the
Capitvated Wilderness- a fence hedge combination with sculptural elements included.
The orchard is located in the cemetery site off the Old Ruthergen Road, east
of
the shopping centre in the Gorbals. KCG have helped the project by providing
advice and practical support in the development and implementation phases, ordered
materials for planting, provided tools and helped with volunteer labour.
The project is now complete and was formally launched in the summer. The project
partners were The Artworks Project, Local developers, Land Services and the local
community. The next phase being developed by Amanada Currie the artist is to
bring together a local steering group to help manage the site, make use of
the fruit and ensure its future positive use.
