Rosedale Park Residents' Association, Summerston
In 2002 residents of Rosedale Park in Summerston approached KCG to help solve
problems they were experiencing with a large area of grassland overlooked
by houses on the estate. Residents were being disturbed by regular football
matches taking place on the grass and wanted to move it on to more suitable
areas.
KCG worked with local schools to turn the grassland area into a wildflower
meadow by regularly planting the area with attractive wildflowers. Residents
were also invited to participate in planting days combined with a barbeque.
In addition access to the local Lambhill cemetery had recently been blocked
off causing local walkers to take a short-cut through the garden of adjacent
flats. A kissing gate accessible to cyclists, pushchairs and wheelchairs has
been put in by the Scottish Wildlife Trust to allow access to the cemetery
but prevent unwanted motorcycles and quad bikes from entering.
A third project with the Residents’ Association was to conserve and enhance
the very large and valuable hedge which runs through the estate. This old hawthorn
hedge is an important feeding site for birds and small mammals and the plan
was to plant up gaps in the hedge and increase the amount of hedging in the
area by creating additional hedging. A new hedge approximately 150m long was
planted along a wooden fence to the north of the estate to add to the amount
of hedging and to provide a wind-break and security barrier for residents in
the adjacent houses.
