TEACHER
TRAINING
The start of September saw Kelvin Clyde Greenspace running their annual Teacher
Training courses. These are aimed at Primary and SEN teachers, the purpose being
to aid teachers in the delivery of Glasgow City Council's Birds Minibeasts and
Plants Topic Book. Two separate days were held at Hogganfield Loch with Ashcraig
School very kindly providing accommodation for the indoor aspects of the courses.
The contents of Birds, Minibeasts and Plants Topic Book were broken down into
the two courses.
Course 1 covered Birds and Minibeasts. The morning concentrated on the wide range
of minibeasts found at Hogganfield Loch with teachers trying a variety of collecting
techniques, then learning about the animals collected. The afternoon covered
birds where the teachers tried some games pertinent to birds and then looked
at the wide range of species present at Hogganfield Loch.
Course 2 consisted of a half day covering aspects of plants. The teachers attending
learned the names of common plants, looked at plants in relation to habitats,
seasonal changes, seed dispersal and life cycles. In all 20 teachers attended
both courses. The completed assessment sheets showed that the teachers attending
found both courses of value and were encouraged to carry out outdoor investigations
with their pupils.
